Highlights from the event ‘Carbon Farming MED: Advancing Policy, MRV & Action’ in Brussels

On May 20th, EURAF and Carbon Farming MED project hosted a Capacity Building Workshop titled Carbon Farming MED: Advancing Policy, MRV & Action at the Spanish National Research Center.

Opened by representatives of the Board of EURAF, Julia Guenzel (DeFAF) and Manuel Bertomeu (Comunidad de Sistemas Agroforestales y Cultivos Mixtos / University of Extremadura), followed by a policy session where Valeria Forlin (DG CLIMA) and Gregorio Dávila Díaz (DG AGRI) outlined the EU’s legislative context for carbon farming (CRCF) and agroforestry support under the CAP 2023–2027.

Tristano Bacchetti De Gregoris (SAE Innova) and Gerry Lawson (EURAF) highlighted how research projects contribute to the policy landscape, while Carbon Farming MED project representatives showcased efforts to link farmers, researchers, and carbon markets.

The closing panel brought on the stage four representatives of farming organisations active in Brussels, who saluted the efforts done by the projectand flagged key CRCF implementation challenges, including unclear terminology (e.g. “non-productive trees”) and limited financial incentives tied to low carbon credit values.
