As beneficiaries of agroforestry products and services, DigitAF includes all the stakeholders in the value chain, notably:

  • wholesalers
  • retailers
  • organizations trading carbon sequestration and biodiversity benefits of agroforestry systems
  • final consumers looking for good value and environmentally beneficial products

Some of the barriers to the expansion of agroforestry occur due to upstream and downstream constraints in the value chain and problems in ensuring robust contracts and coordination between actors. For value chains to be favorable to agroforestry development, its benefits need to be accounted for, so that actors in the value chain can recognize and valorize agroforestry products and services.

However, at present, many of the benefits of agroforestry beyond the farm gate are inadequately quantified. As agroforestry is increasingly upscaled, it is important that claims about biodiversity, carbon, soil health, and animal welfare benefits of agroforestry products and services can be robustly and contractually defended.

Therefore, actors in the value chain need tools to verify and account for agroforestry benefits in terms of:

  • enhanced biodiversity
  • carbon sequestration
  • soil health
  • methods to brand agroforestry products
