MVARC
Country: Portugal The MVArc mission embraces research, development and demonstration of agroecological approaches to sustainable land management in a dryland landscape/semi-arid climate. Within a farm environment near Mértola, Alentejo, south of Portugal, MVarc’s unique approach is to combine a plot and landscape modelling lab with plot to watershed/catchment scale experimental trials investigating agroecological approaches to land management in a dryland system. The modelling lab builds on more than 15 years experience of its staff on process-based models, sustainability assessment, agroforestry and organic agricultural research. The MVArc mission embraces research, development and demonstration of agroecological approaches to sustainable land management in a dryland landscape/semi-arid climate. Furthermore a long experience on development of stand alone and web-based tools that capture the complexity of biophysical relationships between trees, agriculture and the environment allows us to understand and improve management decisions under scenarios of climate change at different scales (plot, farm, landscape, regions, continental) while also considering financial and economic criteria in the decision-making process.
